Demographics are changing, while numbers are steady, in U.S. church attendance

According to a recent study in Sociology of Religion by University of Nebraska-Lincoln sociologist Philip Schwadel, Americans have been worshipping as much as their 1970s counterparts, but the composition of congregations has changed over the years. The study shows that Catholics, women, and southerners are not as reliable church-goers these days due to their higher education levels, also leading to increased economic mobility. Women were at the front of the movement, with the most significant decrease in church attendance. Schwadel believes this might be considerably detrimental to congregations due to the historical importance of women as the backbone of many church functions and organizations.
