77: Interview with Darrel Ray, Questions for An Atheist

By on August 7, 2012

Tom sits down with author and activist Darrel Ray to discuss his new book, “Sex & God: How Religion Distorts Sexuality”, as well as the Recovering Religionists organization. Also, Mike Gage bites the bullet and starts progressing through a list of questions posed by Christians designed to give atheists pause. Thanks for tuning in!

Hello, I’m listening to this interview and enjoying it! One comment to Mr. Ray is that if he looked into feminist literature he may find a lot of critical discussions about religion and sexuality. I was surprised to hear him say that no one has written about it before, and I was deep into all of that in college in the 80’s. Also, a lot of eating disorder books delve into the food/sex/religion arena.

Elizabeth, you are partially correct. I was not clear in my statement. What I meant was, no one has written a book and few if any articles from a scientific point of view on the intersection of sex and religion. Feminists have touched on it but I have seen no one treat the topic in the way I am suggesting in Sex and God. In general, the human sexuality community has stayed clear of the whole religion’s impact on sexuality, angle.

Ivan

Jesus… Can this Tom guy ask a question without stumbling around for 5 minutes?

Thanks Ivan for the feedback. But I’d like to ask you something. Sometimes, you know, I have always wondered, what sort of, or rather, what kind of — maybe, what brand — of mentality to take to things, the substance, of things that people say for criticism, or perhaps it is support, and how to improve, on, maybe, well… I don’t know perhaps? In all honesty though, thanks for listening and I hope the rest of the interviews I conduct turn out better for you.
