Christian exodus during anti-bullying talk

By on April 30, 2012

Dan Savage, founder of the It Gets Better campaign was a key speaker at a national conference on journalism this week, and was ticketed to deliver a talk on anti-bullying, a topic on which he is fluent. It is certainly no secret that the largest amount of gay bullying is religiously motivated given that the Bible explicitly describes it as a truly sinful act, and those partaking in such pleasures are abominations deserving of the death penalty.

Lev. 18:22, “You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.”

Lev. 20:13, “If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltness is upon them.”

It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to give an adequate talk regarding the issue of gay bullying without mentioning the Bible. Tiptoeing around this fact is counterproductive, since the issue needs to be addressed squarely if things are ever going to get better. Dan Savage knows this perhaps better than anyone, and so he pulls no punches. Consequently, many Christians left their seats and headed for the exits, upset about what they were hearing. Here is that particular part of Dan’s talk.

A thing to note about Dan’s rant is that he said nothing disparaging about Christians. All he did was quote scripture and reveal the absurdly high levels of hypocrisy that many Christians emanate when they cherry pick Bible verses to suit their needs. The Bible promotes anti-gay sentiment, and people frequently use that as justification to treat homosexuals poorly and limit their rights. However, as Dan points out, the Bible also explicitly condones slavery, yet modern Christians seem to have no problem ignoring the almighty in this case. This, then, reveals the obvious reality of the situation—Christians are not getting their moral compass from the Bible, but instead have their own internal sense of morality just like anyone else, including nonbelievers.

Also, Savage rightly points out how silly it is for Christians to walk out on him during his talk. After all, Dan, as a gay man, is the constant target of these Biblical verses and the resultant religiously motivated hatred. What kind of message are these Christians trying to convey with their exodus? What kind of statement are they making other than revealing their own embarrassment at the fact that they’re being forced to confront the harsh reality regarding the content of their holy book and then choosing to ignore it? They’re not saving face by walking out of that room. If anything, they’re helping Savage make his point by showing how impervious they are to reason.

I wish that those walking out were embarrassed. I don’t think so. They still choose not to confront or contemplate anything that borders on reality. They’ve been indoctrinated and crave a false safety and a god that’s responsible for their life path. They’re passive observers of their own lives with free will lost somewhere in the “god’s plan” thing, Oh, and eternal bliss. Can’t leave that out. Knowledge of the natural world is not embraced, it’s shunned. Good grief! What broke my heart is that they are still so young. They’re destined to spend their lives without knowledge, only blind faith. How depressing. More depressing is that they’ll teach their children the same thing. They’ll just strip all their natural scientific intincts right out of them early on and create more arm waving, head bowing, god “fearing,” afraid of nashing teeth tortuous hell, mega-church-loving copies of themselves.

Yeah, on second thought they’re probably not embarrassed. They’re doing what Christians have become so good at as of late-turning things around and making themselves out to be the victims. “I’m offended that a homosexual takes offense with my bigoted beliefs!” Wake up, people!

Behold, the Christian reaction to cognitive dissonance: insert fingers in ears and walk out, because just the simple act of listening to something your dogma doesn’t agree with is dangerous.

Religious faith always gives people an excuse to behave badly.

As a Christian, I too am disappointed at their turning and running. Christians today are pansies as he said, and are quick to turn and run or otherwise avoid conflict. Never-mind that many of his statements about the “bullshit” in the Bible are wrong and he clearly is misinformed on the Bible’s stance on various issues, I do think he raises some issues that should be addressed.

On slavery: The Bible also tells a little story about God’s chosen people being enslaved for a very long time. Do this mean that God approves of Christians being slaves? No, and nothing in the Bible supports the position that God approves of slavery. God gives men (and women) free will, and some men (and women) abuse their abilities and take advantage of other humans in various ways. That doesn’t mean God approves of it.

On stoning: Levitical law was a very harsh thing and punished many offenses with harsh consequences. Today, following Jesus’ resurrection, we live under a new covenant and no longer are slaves of the moral code of Leviticus, and I agree with the speaker that it is hypocritical of Christians to use Leviticus as a basis for opposing homo-sexuality, and ignore the remainder of Leviticus.

Now, I think it is very important when discussing sin (before we get to talking about what is a sin and what isn’t a sin) to have a clear understanding of what sin is. Sin is transgressing God’s law, rebelling against God. I want everyone reading this to know that as I Christian, I am commanded to LOVE as God Loves me and therefore, I Love all that are reading this and I will not JUDGE anyone as God will hold me accountable for all of my JUDGEMENTS, and I need as much GRACE and FORGIVENESS as anyone so I refrain from judging as all Christians should. With that said, the Bible and New Testament say very little about homosexuality, in fact every reference in the Bible about homosexual issues is actually about homosexual acts not homosexuality itself (being attracted to the same sex). That being said, sexual purity is a big deal to God, and all people who have sex outside of marriage are sinning against God, whether homo or hetero sexuals. I don’t want to get into any discussion about the legal definition of marriage, as that brings government issues into the discussion, but suffice it to say for the purposes of this discussion that marriage is a commitment before God, a profession, a vow till death. So if you are engaging in sex and you aren’t married you are sinning (as I did before I married my wife, also note as a Christian I have confessed that sin and been forgiven for it). The real question is if a homosexual couple is married are they sinning by engaging in sex. I can’t speak for the Christian church and give you a yes/no answer on this issue, because in my opinion the Bible doesn’t clearly address it. The New Testament passages that are often cited in this area aren’t contemplating a marriage between two same sex people, because those relationships were non-existent in the cultures at that time, but do condemn hetero sexuals who engage in homosexual acts (it appears that those acts were a form of adultery as “exchanging” relations requires you to have had relations and to have relations and not sin you have to be married). The Bible also doesn’t give any endorsement of homosexuality, so I can’t tell you it is approved. What I can tell you, is that no sin is greater than another in the eyes of God. Lying, stealing, cheating, hating, greed, pride, envy are all deplorable to God. However, the Christian God, gave up his son to suffer for our sins and is a God of LOVE. He Loves you and me and will forgive us for our faults (I am not saying homosexuality is a fault, merely saying we all have faults). I realize that many reading this disagree with my faith, but I implore you to give God an opportunity to come in to your heart and Love you. Homosexuals and Hetersexuals all sin, every human does. Only God can judge what is sin, ask him to come in to your heart and guide your life. I am a better man for humbling myself and putting my faith in him. I do believe that homosexuals can be Christians and can and do go to Heaven. Heaven isn’t full of people who were perfect, only one guy who was.
